Crisp fall days seem to be leaning into winter. There is something so simple about yellow and reds transitioning to brown and then the snow should fall to give us that sparkly clean, bright white cover. I imagine that under that cover, the earth is hard at work preparing all the little blossoms of spring anew for us–like Santa and the elves at the North Pole. There is just something so romantic about changing seasons.

Characters are running my life. Jess needs a reality check. Sam needs a cold shower and Matt needs to tone down the sarcasm. An excerpt from my new novel:
“I noticed Sam’s hand lingered at your waist as he headed out the door.” Jen and Emily both saw Jess’s cheeks redden; no extra carrots had ever been put away with such devotion. “Anything you care to share with just us girls?”
“Oh Jess, do tell–you and Sam look so, cozy,” Emily smiled at Jess.

What is it about a dealing that makes our knees weak? My characters are begging me to get back to them–get them out of the location they’re in right now! I even gave myself a reasonable words-per-day goal. I’m quite far behind it. But, all my students’ papers are graded!

The long awaited time has arrived and Windows in the Loft is now available in paperback. I am one of those people who like to have the book in my hand. It doesn’t seem quite real otherwise. Is that how you are? I do wonder if the day will ever come when we can’t have a new book in our hands, but instead will have to live with some kind of cold electronic device. I shudder to think of it.

It seems like sometimes it takes real effort to help the people in your life understand what it takes to write. There is a perception that this is not really work and it can wait until later when more “important” things are pressing. This is why a writer needs a space for writing–so it’s like you are going to work which you are. Ideas?

It always amazes me when my characters take off with my story and I can barely keep up! This was one of those kinds of writing weekends. And hey, if you are in a book club, stay tuned for a contest to win a paperback copy of Windows in the Loft with the book club questions!

What is it about the feel of winter that sets my writing mind in motion? If I could find the key to the focus I sometimes have when I write, that not only shuts off the world around me, but it turns on the world in my head and it becomes so real? I’d love to be able to switch it on and off as needed.

Isn’t it amazing how a writer can follow the suffering of their characters and be helpless to do anything about it? I mean, I could end it and make it all rosy and sunny, but the pen will not cooperate with me and so the characters must figure out how to solve the problems all by themselves while I sit by and record the journey.

On the brink of October, the morning is definitely fall like: fog, wet, cold. Some gremlin came in the night and pulled one of the insulators away from the post so the wire was hanging. I fixed that and put a freshly charged battery on the fencer and now there is a delightful zap! None of the cattle had noticed the lapse so I did no bovine chasing. 🙂 And folks wonder why my books are filled with the land and a bit of a western bent!
