Joy 14 January 2014
We all need joy in our life, and for most of us that means noticing those little things:
the way clouds gathered on the eastern horizon to welcome the sun this morning,
one of bulls with a full belly laying on his side looking like a bloated brown barrel,
the big dipper resting on its handle,
little brown-grey birds nestled into the protection of the thick lilac bushes,
a hug and an “I love you” as you leave into the whatever the day brings.

I love setting; the places and conditions where a story is born and unfolds. I have a particular fondness for rural settings and the beauty beheld in wild places, whether on vast open prairies or high in the rugged mountains or on the shores of lakes and oceans where waves note the passing of time. This spot holds the memories of souls who used to gather and worship.

I know, you’re tired of hearing about resolutions, so here goes, and in no particular order.
1. I resolve to say “I love you” because time is not controlled by me.
2. I resolve to see the joy and blessing in small moments such as the one pictured here, and to give thanks for them.
3. I resolve to do something each day for my health, either physical, emotional, or spiritual and hopefully all three.
4. I resolve to read something and write something every day.
5. I resolve to find some guidance and direction for my career(s) goals.
6. I resolve to not take certain interactions so personally.

I still sit here with nothing recorded to begin this new year. I’ve watched some news stories about simple changes to make in order to start this new year off well: eat produce at every meal, do exercise that is fun, buy pastel colors in your clothes (uh, right.), take a minute for money each day(again, huh?), and be sure to ask for help when you entertain. Okay, I can handle the produce and I already love running every day. I like the horse point of view in this photo best for changes to make in the new year–share a meal with good friends.

Resolutions have been on my mind all day and half the night. I’ve been reading about what others are doing and thinking about what I should do. Only thinking at this point…I know when I write things down it is much stronger. That will come tomorrow. Right. I did write from the seat of the John Deere 730 yesterday in the late afternoon when the sun was warm on my back and had heated the Quonset up to a comfortable temperature for my fingers.

How many are in the midst of contemplating resolutions for the new year? Gazing out these double glass doors at the beauty of Lake McConaughy in winter: bare brown trees line the shore, the wind is causing the cold water to rise up and sparkle in the bright sun, and fat geese rest on the ice. Resolution #1: recognize beauty and the blessing in it.

One more image of heaven on this day so filled with anticipation. I’ve been reading a lot about writing and have decided I need to stop and simply write. I know my characters are getting impatient, especially Jess who needs to have this conflict in her life resolved. Would that I had a writer bringing my own conflict to the climax and resolution, this conflict which weighs on my spirit…wait, I do have a Writer bringing the notes He made before I was formed to life. Patience. Patience.

Last night was one of those nights when creepy evil things were clawing their way up the bed frame unnerving me in my sleep, yet on waking and not being able to get back to sleep, I couldn’t bring my feet to touch the floor. Night terrors..yet another reason to surround my soul with Christmas lights that remind me that I’m never left alone to face monsters in the dark. God is good all the time. This is a spot where I went cross country skiing one day and sat to write.
