Small Talents 12 July 2016

My small talents include: being able to appreciate beauty, baking yummy treats, counting blessings, being ready to head off on some adventure on a moment’s notice, working hard to help get some project finished, and I do an awesome fish face. I can play guitar and sing without causing dogs to howl and I am fiercely loyal.

What differentiates small talent from large? Some examples from my students include: juggling vs. high wire, singing in the shower vs. singing career, baking cookies vs. owning and running a bakery, going out for a jog vs. running a marathon, writing a text message vs. writing a novel, hitting a ball vs. playing in the World Series, riding a horse vs. competing in the Olympics, and giving a speech in class vs. having your own radio show!

Lace 'em up and get out there!

Lace ’em up and get out there!

While I might covet some of those large talents, I am also content to nurture and develop my small talents. I don’t think one has any more merit than the other. We have to figure out what we love, what we are passionate about, what we cannot live without, what brings us joy and fulfillment and go after those things with all the gusto we can muster! And when we do, God cheers us on and smiles.
