I’m thinking about settings today. This photo was taken in front of the best cafe in Allenspark, Colorado. Can you imagine a scene in whatever you are writing happening here? I can.

Writing yesterday had me totally frustrated with my characters. Why can’t they just tow the line? And why can’t I just write without second guessing them? Seriously.

I think that this is Indian’s version of a video game. He sees all the heifers between his ears and decides how he is going to herd them. He loves working cattle! Indian could totally be the main character in a book.

People ask me why horses? in science fiction? And I say, why not? If there are other planets that are habitable or that we go and “homestead” in the future, why wouldn’t there be horses? We have to have agriculture in order to grow food, and cattle or other livestock in order to eat meat, so, we WILL NEED HORSES! And, as long as girls keep being born, there will be horse lovers. Yes, the boys like them too, and that is a good thing, but I don’t think there have ever been such devoted lovers of horses as girls and women. You?

Sometimes writing is such hard work. I am pushing myself to trounce that little naysayer who perches on my shoulder oozing negative thoughts. Just get it out first, revise later. I love this shadow shot!

I’m working to keep up with my NaNoWriMo goals with difficulty! I really need a writing space inside; the barn is too cold this time of year, and not really so practical. I need a desk, windows, and a door I can close out distractions with. Warmth is important. Dreamed of my characters, especially Jess last night–but everything was tainted by zombies I couldn’t get rid of. 🙂

30 October 2013

Another beautiful day on the eastern plains of Colorado–started with a bit of fog making it difficult to see the heifers, all those little mamas grazing contentedly in the pasture. My Jess character is working fervently to find her courage and face her demons. I hope she finds a moment to count her blessings and realize what she has to offer. Her Sam stands by waiting as well.

It was such a beautiful weekend in eastern Colorado. Indian was calling to me to come ride, so I had to. It put me in mind of my character Jess and what she might be up to–more than likely wishing she had horses out her back door. Everyone should; it makes life so much more joyful.
