revolutions 28 December 2015

IMG_0381

How this planet managed to make another trip around the sun so fast is beyond me. It was only last week that I was posting about my resolutions for the new year 2015! I have read that this way of keeping track of the year is really only used for reckoning times in ordinary affairs. Who lives in ordinary affairs anyway? A little bird told me that a Martian year is almost twice as long as our Earth year, and that would mean I’m only about half my age with a world of possibility ahead. I like that idea and it may just be a  mind shift, I mean my world should be open to opportunities that come along, right?

I’m still searching for my purpose here, and we wonder why college graduates don’t know what to do. I’ve been including in my daily prayers in the last few months for God to reveal to me a plan, for doors to open even just a crack and for others to slam shut no matter how IMG_0400loud I bang on them. There are so many things I want to do, and yet I have to be practical-you know, make a living and all that. But I don’t want practical to bury dreams, and I have some ideas about at least exploring some of the dreams. Clearly, I’m working toward a resolution list, but I want to go at it with increased revolutions-like finding the throttle on the stationary engine so I can hear it roar out its rhythm.

Since we can’t seem to move our government to get rid of changing the time switch twice-a-year, maybe I’ll lobby for moving to Martian time.

Evening 24 December 2015

IMG_0397

I can remember so many Christmas Eve nights- waiting not so patiently for the morning! I know somewhat of Mary’s feelings as she prepared for her baby to be born. I know I was terrified and also so excited to meet the little life that had been swimming about inside me for so long. I was also sad to have to let go and bring these miracles into the world. And then, to hold that tiny baby and be so filled with joy and awe that it filled every part of my being. It was such peace and stillness and incredible love and warmth, like the hearth with the fire burning and the festive decorations.

My prayer for all of you is that this day finds you enveloped in the warmth and love of family and friends, the harmony of Christmas carols, the flickering light of candles, and the joy of coming birth of the Savior in that tiny little baby.

Travel 23 December 2015

IMG_0425

We do love to travel by road to various places, and there is usually some kind of antique farm machinery or show involved. Along the way, we see family and friends, and we always meet new friends. These last few days, we traveled through several states on our way to Atlanta and back home, taking a different route in order to see some new country.

We drove through towns with awesome names, like Hickory Flats where there was a little lake surrounding an island filled with trees. I thought about Huck Finn and knew he’d be at home there. The forests are thick in the Southeast; the trees grow like weeds with no struggle at all. In fact, the people there are always battling the trees to keep their fields and roads and paths clear, while we carry buckets and buckets of water to ours and nurture IMG_0409each little bud. We put wire cages around the slim trunks so the rabbits don’t destroy them, while their trees grow tall and straight like a bunch of match sticks and slowly encroach on the ponds, fields, and driveways.

Crossing many bridges, we both thought about driving our tractors over and through such beautiful country, as we gazed out the windows of the pick-up. I was impressed with the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, and with its history:

Civic leader Luther Ely Smith conceived the idea of building a memorial to help revive the riverfront and memorialize the story of the nation’s westward expansion. Through a nationwide design competition conducted 1947–1948, Eero Saarinen’s stainless steel Arch was chosen as the memorial that would celebrate the accomplishments of early pioneers. St. Louis celebrated with a groundbreaking on June 23, 1959. (gateway arch.com)

IMG_0415I also met some old horse friends, who were only to happy to get a good scratch  and rub down, not to mention the cinnamon candy. Our friends, Mary and Wayne, are the kind of friends where it doesn’t matter how much time has passed since last we came together-we just take up where we left off. Good people are like that. My early morning walk around the place brought back so many runs and the tangy scent of deep pines and paths covered with the leaves of fall-a lovely way to bring in Christmas week.

Zephaniah 17 December 2015

IMG_0374

I never knew this book was even in the Bible. It’s a tiny book, but with a big message of hope and power:

The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. Zephaniah 3: 17

So, I have my own warrior and he rejoices over me with gladness. I think that is pretty cool. And I love the idea of festival. Joy and singing and celebration. I bet God would be a pretty good poker player, and I doubt I’d stand a chance in a trivia game…and then there are charades!

I took a little tour of Christmas this morning, at least in ornaments. I have this really neat Boyds Bear at my desk. He sits with his patched hat and scarf, perfectly happy to be reading a dog-eared copy of ‘The Book of Frosty.’ We all need our heroes.

Christmas cards have been arriving too,

IMG_0389bringing messages from friends and family, and we love to have them displayed to see the lovely scenes and to reread the notes.

IMG_0380On our tree, a wise owl hides in the branches and one of our western ornaments reminds us of long trail rides, and the angel on top proclaims the birth of Christ! Cake and candles please-it is the season of new birth, new life, renewal, and lots and lots of joy.

Wind 16 December 2015

IMG_0366

Snow and wind always bring me into Laura Ingalls Wilder’s writing. Her descriptions in The Long Winter of following the rope to the barn or trying to get home from school as a blizzard hits and almost ending up lost on the prairie, saved only by a chance bump into the wall of a building. Of townspeople’s meager rations because the supply trains cannot get through the snow drifts, and twisting hay into sticks to burn in order to cook and to have some warmth against the chilling winds.

I made up my mind to go for a walk yesterday afternoon, after being inside all day and watching the snow blow across the pasture. The cold wind made my head hurt, even swathed as it was in underarmor and wool. I only meandered a quarter-mile, but keepingIMG_0362 my head down to avoid the worst of the gusts, I can see how easy it would be to lose my way. Returning to the house, I was glad not to have to twist sticks of hay to burn for heat! The strength and perseverance of those pioneers inspires and humbles me.

Today everything is still covered with that layer of ice and it is shiny with the pink glow of early morning. Advent, arrival, anticipation-the season of the most incredible journey ever conceived.

Go Minnie Mo! 15 December 2015

IMG_0356

From Psalm 147: 16-17: He gives snow like wool; he scatters hoarfrost like ashes. He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand before his cold?

The ice crystals were hurling down like crumbs and the snow is covering the Earth here like wool on sheep! They need their wool today because it is a “put the hand warmers in IMG_0372your gloves before you go to feed” kind of day. I hadn’t planned on a snow day in the middle of finals week, but God must have decided that I needed some sourdough pancakes this morning-after I fed critters of course.

Everything had a slick, shiny quarter-inch coating of ice: the wire gate, the chain links keeping the panel gates closed, the handle of the feed fork, the bulls and horses, the windows and of IMG_0365course, the sidewalk…stay where you know the grass grows. The Schwann’s man cancelled delivery and I’m on my second pot of coffee.

Snow is coming down in huge flakes, but they are holding on their hats as the screaming wind catapults them straight on east. While it is the season to don your gay apparel, it seems prudent to don your wool socks, coveralls, scarf, balaclava, wool hat, and don’t forget to IMG_0359put the hand warmers in your gloves if you want to keep your fingers-before you head outside.

In this wind, no one “can stand before His cold!” But oh, it is clear who is the Lord God, Master of the Universe, the Mighty God, He who is and was and always will be, Elohim. Who am I to argue?

Star Show 14 December 2015

IMG_0332

The Geminid star shower was absolutely awesome this morning. Asteroid 3200 Phaethon is not your run-of-the-mill comet, but scientists think it is a rock comet that spews its dusty particles when it gets close to the sun each year. We pass through its trail of dirt on our cosmic ship, Earth, each December. I’ve been seeing more shooting stars this week than normal and the shimmer of so many trails today was like being at a fireworks show. At one point, I saw two cross each other’s trails from opposite sides of the heavens.

Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing. Isaiah 40:26

Can you imagine having the heavens as your canvas and designing the stars into the IMG_0355universe? Talk about the ultimate artist! And that is just the stars. It’s no wonder I like Christmas lights so much. They remind me of the stars, and there is just something so tranquil about the night sky, bringing that balm to soul and spirit and an invitation to contemplate and pray and to give thanks and praise to God the Creator and lover of beauty.

Wonder 10 December 2015

IMG_0329

Aren’t our lives filled with wonder? Even in the middle of frustration, sorrow, anger, spilled milk, or mud on the carpet, there is so much to notice and be thankful for. Today I am reminded of a day 23 years ago when my Alex struggled into this world, his big brother Jared, cheering him on. The start was rough and I am thankful for the experts who helped him to survive those first few tenuous weeks. Even now, I can still bring to mind the awe and Scan 131780039wonder of a new life.

Meteors were plentiful this morning and I drew breath at the shimmering beauty in the heavens. The moon is just a small sliver right now and Orion is fading on the western horizon; everything is constantly changing. A new crop of cottontails are hopping about and one appeared to be running for his life when my tractor moved into the pasture.

IMG_0963The sun was just peeping over the horizon when I finished feeding and came back inside for another cup of coffee and to get to work. I made a list before I went to bed last night so I wouldn’t forget to get a few things done that have flitted through my brain the last couple of days. Hot coffee always makes my work easier. I’m resolved to try to remember today, when classroom behavior runs amuck or technology fails, to be thankful and to notice wonder.

Job 37:5 God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend.

Winter 9 December 2015

IMG_0325

We’ve settled into our winter routine around here, although the temperatures have been fairly warm this week, but the winds are making up for that in a big way! Getting out my beautiful Minneapolis Moline ZA in the morning and hooking up to the hay rack or sled to feed the bulls and the horses is a great way to start the day. One bull, I call him Big Red, is the big bully of IMG_0352them all and the only one who isn’t black. Today when he came up to the pile of oat hay, I renamed him “Curly.” I think the reason is obvious.

The horses never butt heads; they get to claim their pile of oat hay in this order: Cowboy, Doc, Oreo, and last Indian. Now, Indian is the biggest of the four, but he is the bottom of the order for sure and he knows it and IMG_0353simply stays out-of-the-way until the fourth pile is pitched over the fence. I wonder if there is a lesson for me in that.

Curly is the boss of the bulls, but that does not stop the others from ramming head with him. They must know they will lose, but they continue to challenge him every day-all but the one. He has figured out just to go around the other side of the pile and eat in peace. Lessons from the farm.

Arrival 8 December 2015

IMG_0326

My little pine cone angel.

Advent is the season of arrival. We wait with joyful anticipation for Christ’s birth. There are many other things we want to have arrive including spending time with family and friends, eating lots of yummy goodies, gifts of course, and Christmas music 24/7-that could just be me though.

We wait for many arrivals, but sometimes we need to act to make them happen and sometimes we need to be patient to let things happen in their time. That is so difficult! I put our lights up on Sunday and couldn’t wait for it to get dark so I could see them. Now, when I get back from my run, I can see the IMG_0332lights from about three-quarters of a mile and then when I get close, I can see the apple tree all decked out and I feel the peace and joy and warmth of that faraway and long-ago manger.

Anticipation and arrival: of gifts ordered and the smile they will bring, of recipe cards on the kitchen counter and the sweet taste of family traditions, of travel plans and time with family, friends, and neighbors, of homecomings, of carols and harmony, and of the bright star over the sacred birthplace of our Lord.
